FirstNet Establishes Chief Customer Office to Prepare for Public-Private Partnership, Network Deployment

By Amanda Murphy

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) Board met in Chicago recently to discuss taking action toward positioning the organization for a successful deployment of the nationwide public safety broadband network. The Network requires a large-scale public-private partnership to be successful. The private partner will be determined soon, when the contract has been officially awarded.

“We have a clear focus to ensure the partnership is successful starting day one,” said FirstNet Board Chair Sue Swenson in a recent press release.  “Our goal is to hit the ground running with our partner to deliver the best solution to public safety and the States.”

As a next step in FirstNet’s evolution, the organization has established a Chief Customer Office (CCO) to coordinate consultation and State Plans, product management, and marketing, and will be establishing the Network Program Office (NPO) to work with the chosen industry partner on Radio Access Network (RAN) deployment throughout the states. FirstNet leadership has already appointed the Chief Customer Officer to lead these efforts.

According to FirstNet, Network deployment is on track to begin November 2016.

Connect Iowa, in partnership with the ISICSB, has delivered FirstNet presentations to representatives of all 99 Iowa counties and hosted workshops in the 6 regions throughout Iowa. During these workshops, a chair and vice-chair were elected to the Regional Interoperability Committee (RIC) to work with the ISICSB.

About FirstNet: The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States prompted the 9/11 Commission to recommend a dedicated public safety communications network. This network would be interoperable and nationwide to resolve the communication issues emergency responders face when tragedy strikes. The First Responder Network Authority, or FirstNet, an organization created in 2012 as part of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation, is overseeing the building of the network.
